Circulation magazine newsletter
Hi everyone!
We are back again with another Circulation newsletter. With Issue Three well and truly underway, this week has all been about battling Adobe Indesign and laying up articles. In this week’s newsletter, we have Eden Hartley reviewing Esme Emerson’s latest single ‘Together’ and (of course) our weekly playlist and weekly events. Come along to our launch party on the 14th of December at the Fulford Arms. It is an all day event with some fantastic bands playing.
Here is a sneak peek of the cover for Issue Three.
Review: Esme Emerson’s new single ‘Together’ by Eden Hartley
Iconic indie/folk duo Esme Emerson has recently released their song ‘Together’, a lyrically powerful song about finding solidarity in another when you’re going through a hard time.
The song structurally expresses being alone, as well as the ability to ‘be alone together’ through how it travels across moments of quiet and moments of loud. The song begins with feeling isolated and lonely, the slow guitar strumming alongside Esme’s vocals: “I wish I could learn to love again”. As the song progresses, isolation turns into the hope of being isolated together: “I’ve been down / you’ve been down / let’s be down together” alongside introducing a stronger and louder instrumentation. Vocals from Esme’s brother Emerson can be heard in the second half of the song, reinforcing the idea of coming together, of being ‘down together’.
A final moment of feeling alone and lost occurs again during the bridge as the song returns to isolating Esme’s vocals: “I hope I’ll do better this time / I’m so tired of my own pride”. The song builds from here for the final chorus, reigniting feelings of connection and of being together, crescendoing with a beautiful melodic violin lifting the rest of the song to its end.
I have really enjoyed listening to this song for the past week! Esme Emerson is such a talented duo to create a song production that accurately reflects their lyricism.
